Privacy Policy
1. Our Commitment to Privacy
Back Country Sports is committed to protecting your personal information in compliance with the BC Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). We collect only the information necessary to provide products and services and to meet our federal legal obligations as a licensed firearms business.
2. Information We Collect
To process orders and comply with the Canadian Firearms Program (CFP), we collect:
- Contact Information: Name, home address, email, and phone number.
- Firearms Licensing: Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) number and expiry date.
- Verification Data: Date of birth and, for non-in-person transfers, a secondary piece of government-issued photo ID to verify identity.
- Transaction Details: Records of firearms purchased, including make, model, and serial number.
3. Mandatory Purpose of Collection & Use
We collect and use your data for the following purposes:
- Identity & License Verification: We are legally required to verify the validity of your PAL with the Chief Firearms Officer (CFO) before any transfer.
- Record-Keeping: For non-restricted firearms, we must record the sale and maintain these records for 20 years as required by federal law.
- Restricted/Prohibited Transfers: We must share your information with the Chief Firearms Officer (CFO) to initiate and complete transfers for restricted or prohibited firearms.
4. Disclosure of Information
We do not sell your personal information. Disclosure is limited to:
- Law Enforcement & Regulatory Bodies: Mandatory reporting to the RCMP and CFO for license verification and transfer authorizations.
- Service Providers: Sharing address details with Canada Post or other approved carriers for secure delivery.
- Legal Requirements: Disclosure as required by a court order, search warrant, or subpoena.
5. Retention and Security
- Extended Retention: Standard PIPA "right to be forgotten" requests are subject to federal law; transaction records involving firearms must be retained for at least 20 years.
- Security Measures: We use appropriate safeguards (e.g., encryption, firewalls, and restricted access) to protect sensitive ownership data.
6. Your Rights (Access and Correction)
Under PIPA, you have the right to:
- Request access to your personal information held by us.
- Request corrections to any inaccuracies in your records.
- Note: Withdrawal of consent for data retention may not be possible where it would frustrate a legal obligation (such as mandatory 20-year record-keeping)
